A Study on Development of a Scale to Measure Postpartum Adaptation

Abstract
The postpartum mother experiences many normal but important & potentially dangerous physiologic & psychological changes. Physiologic changes can be life-threatening, and psychological & familial adjustments can be threaten mental health or other family stabily and the neonate¢¥s long-term physical & psychological well-being. Therefore, the concept of postpartum adaptation must be a central theme in health related research, particularly nursing. But postpartum adaptation has been described in a variety of ways & measured differently from study to study. So there is a lack of conceptual agreement on what is postpartum adaptation. The purpose of this study was to develop a scale to measure postpartum adaptation & to test its reliability & validity & select the items for the final scale. The data was collected from June 5 to 14, 1990. The subject of this study were 78 healthy mothers in puerperium period and collected data were analyzed using the SPSS PC+ Package.
The process & results of the study may be summarized as follows.
1. In developing this instrument, the researcher first established a conceptual framework based on the results of previous research & exporatory survey. The scale for this instrument consisted of 74 items, covering 4 factors.
2. The content validity was obtained through meetings for discussion by two judge ment groups. As the result, 28 items were deleted from the scale.
3. The reliability of this scale was tested by Cronbach¢¥s alpha, the coefficient was.9524.
4. The construct validity was tested by known group technique. The degree of postpartum adaptation for cesarean sectian mothers was significaantly lower than for vaginal delivery mothers.
5. As a conclusion, this developed scale is a self-reporting, 31 item Likert scale, covering 4 factors; physical status and function (7 items), self-identity (9 items), family relationship (7 items), baby care activity (8 items).
6. Further studies to retest the reliability & validity are strongly recommended.
